Training Service Dogs is an important and noble profession. You can chose a commercial path, by apprenticing to a school or professional trainer --- or you can chose a non-profit path, and train to be a foster home for service dogs-in-training.

Here are few of the common ways trained dogs help us:
They help the visually and hearing impaired.
They help people with limited mobility.
They help the police maintain public safety. Dogs trained for police work chase criminals, sniff for drugs, explosives and injured people.

Service dogs help people suffering with psychological, mental and unusual illnesses...One of the benefits offered by a dog, is that it is non-judgmental. Dogs take us for what we are. And even at that, they love us and want to be with us.
Service dogs are being trained to help people with autism, mental illnesses, and other physical problems such as allergies.
(Recently, in the news was an awesome story about a young girl whose allergy to peanuts was life-threatening. Her assistance dog sniffed everything she drank or ate --- and this kept her safe).
Pets are used for companion therapy in nursing homes, hospitals, and children's care --- because it is proven that pets increase the level of endorphins (feel-good hormones), that circulate in our bodies. Besides the sheer enjoyment of stroking a soft animal --- being around animals helps lower blood pressure, reduce stress and anxiety.
