Why are poodles given up?

Poodles are given up because people move, retire into communities that don't allow pets, owners pass away or become ill, and for other reasons.

According to the AKC - poodles are the 2nd most popular breed in the Toy Class -

No wonder - they are essentially hypoallergenic. Most people, even those with allergies, can tolerate poodles. Their unique fur is very low-shedding.

Another reason for poodle's popularity is that they are highly intelligent, loyal and relatively easy to train.

They are ideal dogs for those living in apartments.

Poodles are Smart, Cute and Low Shedding...plus a rescue dog Is often already trained and housebroken.

Poodles Are Ideal Apartment Dogs - And Many Seniors Love This Breed Because It is Easy To Keep

Poodles are a breed most likely to be left-behind when an owner moves to assisted living, a nursing home or, sadly, passes away.

Here is some general information about poodles:

They come in a size to fit almost every situation from the dainty "Teacup Poodle" to the Miniature.

Miniatures stand at between 10 - 15 inches at the shoulder, and the Toy Poodle, under 10". (Teacups are smaller). They also come in many colors including white, black, apricot and gray.

Poodles are easily trained. Many think they are the most intelligent of all dogs.

Poodles are lively, happy and have a pleasant disposition. Many describe their poodles as being funny and clever. Plus, poodles love to perform and show-off their fun behaviors.

Poodles love people, and they become very devoted to their owner. Like all breeds --- the poodle needs to be socialized, exercised and trained. In return, you will get a dog that is outgoing, friendly and affectionate.

Poodles have a low shedding coat. And it is a single layer coat, which some describe as "hair" not fur.

On the downside - Their grooming needs are high..

You'll need to brush your dog faithfully and to give baths. Many owners do not like doing this, and they leave the job for their groomer.

Many poodle owners, indulge in professional grooming to keep their pets looking good. Professionals will offer many styles of cuts, from the traditional "show cut" to a more relaxed "puppy cut".

Like other breeds in the Toy Group --- your small dog needs protection from hot and cold weather. Poodles need to wear a coat in the winter, and they need a cool place to rest in the summer.

Poodles also need soft places to sleep and rest. They are lean animals, and need cushioning to keep them safe and comfortable.
