Miniature Schnauzers are a Sturdy and Dependable Pet, Good With Children and Low Shedding
Miniature Schnauzers are #4 in popularity on the AKC list of Toy Breeds. The female is an 11 to 15 pound dog that stands around a foot tall at the shoulders. The males are larger, weighing up to 18 pounds.
Miniature Schnauzers have a distinctive coat, with a wiry top coat and a softer undercoat.
The "standard" grooming style is to trim the body hair short, while leaving the hair much longer on the ears, legs, and edge of the body. They come in various colors including salt and pepper, black and black and silver.
Miniature Schnauzers do not shed much hair, so some people say they are non-shedding. They are a good choice for people with allergies.
Miniature Schnauzers are friendly, intelligent and obedient. They are excellent watchdogs. Yet they are not as aggressive as some of their terrier cousins. They are good with children, and their keen intelligence makes them easy to train. They are playful, and will amuse themselves with toys, or have fun with their human family.
Bred to be a ratting dog, Miniature Schnauzers, as will all terriers, go after small pets such as birds and rodents. They are known to attack cats, but this tendency can be controlled by raising them with other animals from a young age.
