Methods of Training Dogs - From Puppy Preschool to Adult Training

The most up-to-date methods of training dog, focuses on obedience training. This dog training method uses repetition, reward and praise, and soon your dog will learn to give you what you expect. Dogs are intelligent creatures, and they want to please you.

If you have a puppy, start early. Some trainers will ask you to attend "doggie preschool". During this period, up to 3 months of age, you should be working diligently on "house training".

You also should make certain your puppy gets familiar with a leash (use a very lightweight nylon leash and nylon collar).

And you should give your puppy "back time"- and this means, simply, that you gently hold your puppy on its back with paws up in the air, to develop "trust" in you as the "pack leader". Practice giving your dog back time - especially when the puppy is "acting up" - such as barking, or excessive biting.

Dog Training Requires You To Be Consistent, Never Punish, and Be Realistic...

Commands your dog needs to know:

Heel - every dog should know how to walk on a leash, and do so politely without pulling

Come - for safety's sake, your dog needs to respond to this command

Down, Stay - your dog should be able to rest and relax on command

Sit - Another matter of control, your dog should be able to remain politely under your control, and remain sitting until you release the dog from the instruction.

Advanced Commands:

Your dog will sit before crossing a street - and await your signal to continue.

Potty - Many dogs are trained to do their business at their owner's suggestion.

Quiet - Barking dogs can be trained to stop nuisance barking.

Incorporate Obedience Training Into Your Regular Rituals...

Methods of dog training that really work include those where frequent sessions are the standard.

A qualified trainer can work miracles in a short period of time. In 5 days, for example, your dog can learn to heel, come and stay.

You can do the same, especially if you act like pack leader, displaying a calm, assure attitude.

(Having a pocket full of dog treats also helps).

When you get the behavior you want, reward the dog with a small treat and lots of praise and acknowledgement for a job well-done.

Many trainers use "negative" methods, such as choke or pinch collars to reinforce their dominance over the dog.

Other trainers use a positive method, such as "clicker training" - which helps the dog identify when it has done something good. For example, you are teaching "sit" so you click when the dog sits, and give a treat.

Many dog trainers use a "verbal noise" --- such as "ack ack ack" to get the dog's attention - and even a quick pushing of the fingers into the dog's fur - to get it's attention (no pain whatsoever) :)

Watching Cesar Millan "The Dog Whisperer" on TV get control of a untrained dog within minutes - attests to the theory of the pack leader.

Dog training requires consistent and repetitive demands from the owner. Dogs want to get along, and behave. Their natural state is to be calm and submissive --- almost all of the time - except when they are frightened, or are protecting their property.

There are many methods of training dogs. If you don't have the time or the desire to conduct regular, routine and fun training sessions, then please get some professional help.

Even going to a group class at a community recreation center or at a pet supply store will give you lots of pointers.

When you understand a few basic methods of dog training --- it will make life easier for everyone involved...especially your dog.
