Dogs Good With Kids - How to Select and Train a Good Family Pet

Dogs good with kids? Is one particular breed perfect? No --- even the ever-popular Golden Retriever is not right for all families...although they can be excellent choice for the family seeking a dog good with kids.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Age of children: If there are toddlers in the family --- a tiny fragile dog is not a good choice, unless you can monitor the children and the dog constantly.

Do you expect your kids to help with feeding, walking or other dog-related chores? If so, your dog needs to be easy to train and you need to take the time to socialize the dog with other dogs and people.

Are any family-members allergic? If yes, you should narrow your search to the so-called hypoallergenic breeds --- those with minimal shedding: All poodles, bichon, wheaten terrier, and portugese water dogs, are a few suggestions.

Temperment: How much time will the dog be alone? If the dog will be alone all day while adults work and kids are at school, select a breed that is not hyperactive and can tolerate being confined.

Grooming: Some breeds shed a lot, require daily brushing and even professional grooming. If you are an extreme neat-freak, don't select a golden retriever, lab, corgie or even a pug, because these breeds shed a lot.

Feeding and walking: Small and medium sized dogs are easier for most people to handle, and it is much easier to clean-up after a small dog's potty than a large breed. Think about this BEFORE selecting a big dog, such as a great dane or mastiff.

Dogs Good With Kids - Think "Peanuts" Cartoon - Beagles are good with kids...

Known for being calm, friendly and eager...a beagle may be an excellent choice for the family wanting a dog that is a manageable size.

Golden Retrievers and Labs

Golden Retrievers are almost universally regarded as being the best "dog good with kids". I'd also recommend yellow and black Labrador Retrievers as being dogs good with kids. Because I have lived with both breeds, I can testify that these dogs, properly socialized, are people-lovers and so they make wonderful family pets.

Poodles and Mixed-Breed Poodles Are Loving, Intelligent and Tolerant of Children...

Cockapoo, labradoodle...you name it, there are many breeders today helping to breed the perfect "family pet".

Usually low-sheeding or no-shedding, a mixed-breed poodle is a wonderful combination because of the breed's intelligence, loyalty and companionship. Overall, a very good choice for those seeking a dog good with kids.
