Litter Box Training - Pointers for Kittens and Grown Cats

Clicker Training Cats - And Other Basic Training Concepts

Man With His Beloved Cat Clicker Training Cats, and other basic training techniques, will reward you with a cat that knows these three basics, at a minimum:

1. The cat is litter trained and always goes in the proper place.

2. The cat doesn't scratch furniture, rugs or ruin other items in the home.

3. The cat stays out of trouble and does not engage in potentially harmful behaviors such as chewing electric cords or houseplants.

For many people, cats make the perfect pets. They can be fun, loving and resourceful. Cats can be affectionate, communicative and make good companions.

Living with a naughty cat can be a nightmare...

You come home and the house smells of cat pee. Your furnishings are ripped to shreds. And your knick knacks and houseplants are tattered and broken. These are some of the consequences of having an untrained cat that has the "run" of the house while you're away.

Some cats are naughty just because they are lonely, bored or were never trained properly in the first place.

From kittens to seniors, cats have basic requirements. Kittens need to be trained to use a litter box. You must give them nourishing food that they like, and fresh water. They will need annual Vet check-ups.

From enjoying your cat as a companion animal, to competing in CFA events, cat lovers are everywhere. Cat lovers like to swap stories about their pets, which makes owning a cat a fun and social experience.

Clicker training is very effective, and it works by distracting your cat when in the act of being naughty. You make a noise with a clicker, and sternly say "NO" or "Bad Cat" or whatever corrective word you want to say.

Also, your cat will learn to associate the clicker with a correction. If at the same time, you reward with an edible treat and a soothing voice, you'll be amazed at what a smart and eager cat you have. Cats like to learn.

Scratching posts should be used to give cats a place to act-out this natural instinct.

Furniture should be covered with washable sheets or slipcovers if you need to protect delicate, expensive or prized furniture.

Cat lovers know that training a cat, and living with a cat, is a give-and-take process. Each cat has its own personality and temperment.

Keep your cat entertained with playthings, toys and balls to chase. This will keep your cat's focus on fun activities. There will be less temptation for your cat to get into trouble.

Many cat owners do not let their cats go outside. If you're in this situation, you'll need to train your cat to follow your rules. Putting a leash on the cat during training will give you the control you need. Just remember, to never leave a leash on an unsupervised cat.

Some cat owners confine their cat to one room while they're away, and this is a good solution for many. There is no reason to give your cat "run of the house" while you're out. Doing so leaves a lot of opportunity for accidents. Thoughtful prevention should be your guiding rule as you figure out your cat's capacity for training. Your patience, in the process of training, especially clicker training, will surely be rewarded.
