The Cat Fancy (Fanciers) Assocation (CFA) is the "AKC" for Cat Lovers
The Cat Fancy (Fanciers) Association (CFA) is thought of as the "AKC" for cats. It defines cat breed standards and sponsors competitions for the 40 pedigreed breeds that it recognizes. The term "Cat Fancy" refers to the hobby of breeding or keeping pedigreed cats.
General Information About Domestic Cats:
As far back as 8,000 years ago, cats were domesticated in Africa and the Middle East. Recently it appears that cat domestication first took place in Africa, not in Egypt, as was previously thought. These cats were wildcats, who gathered where grain was stored. The cats were so admired for their beauty and resourcefulness, that humans befriended them, and eventually brought them into their own living spaces to co-habitate as pets.

Pedigreed cat breeds range from the hairless Sphynx and to widely-known Persian, beloved for its luxurious fur.
But most cats that are kept by human are non-pedigreed. They are known by popular names that describe the cat's physical appearance, such as tabby, tortoiseshell, all black, orange and white, and so on.
One of the most famous non-pedigreed cats was President and First Lady Clinton's cat, "Socks". It was a black cat with white socks.
