44th President, Barack Obama Gets Bo, A Portuguese Water Dog, For White House Dog, A Promise He Made To His Kids
44th President, Barack Obama and his wife, Michele, selected a Hypoallergenic Breed, a Portuguese Water Dog, to be White House Dog.
This fulfills a promise they happily made to their two daughters that after they they were settled in the White House, that they would get a dog. And that promise was kept.
Enter Bo, the latest White House Dog. A hypoallergenic breed, The Portugese Water Dog, (PWD), was a gift from Senator Edward Kennedy (another PWD lover). Bo is affectionate and adorable, and the First Family is thrilled. Enthusiastic and playful, the pup was around 6 months old when he became "First Dog".
Most importantly for the First Family, Bo is a hypoallergenic breed, meaning he does not shed much. This greatly reduces airborn dander and other irritants that affect those with allergies to dogs.
Nature's Miracle makes a spray that reduces dander - dander gives some people allergies...
Daughters Sasha and Malia (youngest Sasha suffers from allergies) think Bo is "perfect".
Any six month old dog is a lot of work, but especially a large dog like Bo. Fortunately, for the Obamas, there are plenty of helpers at The White House. And the South Lawn is fenced. - Very important. Can you imagine the turmoil Bo would cause in Washington DC if he got loose?

Q&A and some facts about the Portuguese Water Dog:
Are Portuguese Water Dogs good with children? Portuguese Water Dogs are great with children. Remember, though, that dogs are not human. PWDs will often consider a child as a canine litter mate and could play harder than you might want. And sometimes, that play could be with their mouths. It is important that you never let small children be unsupervised with your dog(s).
How big do Portugues Water Dogs get? The PWD Standard Height (at withers - shoulders) is 20 - 23 inches for males, and females 17 to 21 inches. The males weigh between 42 to 60 pounds, and the females between 35 to 50 pounds.
This is a family-oriented breed that loves everyone, and is good with children, although may be too rough for some youngsters. They may need to be trained not to rough-house with their mouths, as this is unwanted behavior especially around children.
Children will need to be carefully supervised when interacting with a new dog.
Portuguese Water Dogs do not like to be alone. They do not do well in a kennel environment. Families who are away during the day should think carefully before selecting a PWD for the family pet. This is a very high energy dog that needs a lot of play time and a great deal of exercise.
How about this for an idea? Take your dog to work! This breed is an ideal dog to take to work. As he or she matures, the dog will find a nice cozy spot to sleep on a dog bed near you, and as long as you are free to take a couple of doggie walks a day, your dog should easily adjust to such a routine.
Whether in the city or suburbs, please, make sure you socialize your dog. Train your dog not to jump up on people (they love to jump and hop). Train your dog to be obedient on the leash. The dog is easy to train, and responds well to praise and treats.
Given the right set of circumstances, this is an ideal dog for many people.
In 2008 - The Portuguese Water Dog was #62 in the AKC list of most popular breeds. (Undoubtably, the breed will gain in popularity as more people learn more about Bo, our nation's "First Dog").
